Droid is a name that will be familiar to many as part of Sheffield’s notorious Offmenut Records crew. He’s forged a sound at the bleaker end of the 4×4 spectrum, a sound which recently caught the attention of London-based digital imprint Isolater Records. Having featured on the label’s first release, Droid returns with the 3-track Mindgamer EP, showcasing an ice-cold approach to techno, grime and bassline.

Droid gets things moving with the dub-techno slugger ‘Izoner’, a stoned haze of claustrophobia that sulks its way through to the higher paced grime of ‘Darkside’. This is truly menacing – the kind of riddim that lurks in the corner of a playground with a bag of heavily cut smack in his pants. The EP climaxes with ‘Cookin Up Dub’, where spastic wobbles and whiplash snares keep the 4×4 energy levels high.
